The laptop quoted above has a major problem I need help with. We got it back from our cousin but when we turn it on we get this error:

Code:: No bootable device insert boot disc and press any key

Can anyone help? The HDD isn't recognized in the BIOs either

I am not a tech expert, but it sounds like the boot sector got damaged. Do you have a bootable cd or recovery disc?

You will probably also need to run disc repair once you get into it.

Her PC has a built-in recovery process but the keyboard shortcut will not work :/

The statement you read when trying to boot your machine simply means that the computer can't detect a hard drive with an operating system on it. When it asks for a boot disk, it's asking for a Live CD or for an installation CD. If you still have a HDD in it, then it sounds to me that it's become corrupted. If you can't access it in another laptop, you're going to need to get a new one.

I was told by Acer that I have to buy the recover CDs to reinstall the Hard Drive drivers along with the OS. So yay, I have to wait another 7-8 days, lol.

... Explain to me how you're meant to install drivers on a corrupted disk / disk without an OS.

They should send it on a bootable disc, and hopefully you can enable (or have already enabled) a "boot from disc" option.

*Hopes that it will be possible to run scandisc in safe mode before trying to install anything, so that any bad sectors can get marked. Writing to a bad sector won't be helpful.*

@Liz: I have an OS disc (not for her ACER PC but for a DELL) but it has the same OS as my sister's laptop does. When I try to install the OS, I get an error saying this disk in't bootable and then it asks me to search for the drivers. So, I guess that the hard drive is fine? I'm not sure though. I'm taking it to my Tech school so they computer class can try to fix it.

Often, the problem is the computer is trying to boot from your CD-drive instead of the regular boot system. Try removing your CD. Seems simple, but it worked for me.

Unless the boot order has changed. In which case, it could even be trying to boot from a USB stick.
