Saint Patrick's Day.

Post by Rikachu on March 17th 2010, 7:31 pm

Being Irish, this may be biased, but I hate the fact that this day has gone from being a day to celebrate Irish heritage to an excuse for everyone to get drunk.

Anyone feel the same way? Ummm...

Actually, the whole thing started as a feast day, honoring Saint Patrick. It has become associated with Irish heritage over the years, and the original color of Saint Patrick was blue.

So, it went from a feast day honoring a Saint, to an Irish holiday, to a drunken party.

Here, the only place where it's an excuse to get drunk is the Irish pub in town. But, Yeah. Actually, at school, last year we HAD to wear green and there was Irish food and stuff organized by some of the year 12s, this year everyone seemed to forget...

Personally, I hate the holiday. i think it's stupid that people get to pinch you if you don't wear green, so I've just taken to punching people in the arm (with forewarning) when they pinch me. Worked well this year, I only got pinched once.

And yes, people take it as an excuse to get drunk. Watch, that'll be 9/11 in 200 years.

Sadly, I suspect that in 200 years they will have forgotten 9/11. We've already forgotten Oklahoma City.

I've never personally cared much for Saint Patrick's Day, mainly because I'm not Irish and don't have a clue on what's going on. I still think it's a day where you wear green. Ummm...

Who needs an excuse to get drunk anyway? Saint Patrick's Day doesn't mean you don't get a hangover the next morning.

That is probably the saddest thing about St. Patrick's day. It wasn't until a few years ago that I actually heard the biography of the person the day is about, and it is absolutely fascinating!

He was the son of a wealthy Roman family in Scotland until he was captured by Irish raiders when he was 16 and sold as a slave where he ended up tending his master's sheep for 6 years. Apparently the sheep lived better than he did. He hadn't been much of a Christian while he was at home, but his faith grew while he was a slave. Finally he had a vision of an angel who told him to flee. The ship was waiting for him. He did, and after fleeing 200 miles to the coast there really was a ship headed for his home and ready to set sail!

But he soon realized that they needed someone who understood them to bring the Gospel to them. And since he had lived there, he was qualified. So he chose to go back to them, knowing that he was going to be opposed by the Druids, and that he was going to have to pay his slave-debt to his former master. He became the patron saint of Ireland. (Apostle of Ireland now) and celebrating his life is also celebrating Irish heritage.

Edit: I found the Catholic Church's biogaphy of St Patrick. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11554a.htm You might find it interesting reading.

Irish heritage is worth celebrating. (And it is a LOT more than beer!) St. Patrick is definitely worth remembering. But the day really should be more than just getting drunk...

Well, I'm a quarter Irish myself (and no, I have absolutely no Swiss actually in my veins! :P), so I personally would like to agree with that paragraph.
