Hardmode.org SMB Marathon - December 18th
I feel that this is a serious discussion and it warrants being here. That being said...
(They're also up to $41 in donations and it's still two weeks away, which is great.
The Real Nintendorks Forum wrote:Alright guys, here's the scoop. I know that some of you think that gaming marathons are silly, and that's fine, but I happen to be a part of one in the coming weeks and I want to let you guys know about it and also to get some feedback from you guys before we start.
Basically myself and a few friends will be playing through our favorites from the Super Mario Bros. series for roughly three nights or until we finish. On the docket are nine games:
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
We're pretty excited to have the new Mario on the list. We're hoping to play through it with four people in tow, so it should be a crazy, fun-filled afternoon, at least. We tested out all of our video equipment a month or so back, and I know some people here were able to view the greatness of two of our players failing time and time again at flying over a lava pit in SMW. It was great. We hope to have two to three days of that, but with less failing.
Our setup right now includes a dedicated video stream for the games themselves, and then one other for commentary and other video. "Other video" includes a mobile camera so our shots won't just be static for three days, and we also have a separate cam for the guy running the chatroom. There might potentially be a third camera, but I'm not positive on that just yet. So we'll see. I'm using some pretty fun broadcasting software that allows me to add quite a bit on screen, and so we believe our show will be a little more interesting than just a few nerds sitting on a couch for three days.
Outside of bringing the knowledge of the event to you guys, I also am looking for a few suggestions. I know some of you all have watched these type of shows in the past, what would you suggest to make them a little more lively? Also, we are planning on doing some incentives for hitting certain amounts. For example, at the $50 mark we make someone eat some weird ass crab candy we bought at the Asian Market. We have yet to set a "goal," but if we get to $1,000 I'm shaving my head and at some point in between someone is jumping in an ice cold pool that is right outside the doors from where we're shooting. Any suggestions on what we could do to make it a better experience for you guys would be great (and yes, we're working on getting hot chicks, can't guarantee that one, though).
Now for the simple details:
What: Gaming Charity Event
Who/Where: hardmode.org
When: December 18 ~ 21, starting at 8PM CST
Why: Why not?
How: The Power of Greyskull
For Who: Child's Play

This sounds super lame. I hope those kids' lives are not depending on this.

Is donating to an organization that promotes children playing video games really a worthwhile cause? I feel like if Child's Play was in fact an organization that made children go outside and play it would be worthwhile.
Raps here: This is not what child's play is about. See my post below.

Also, their are too many children out there anyway. This will help with that overpopulation crap the hippies are always talking about!

Child's Play is run by Penny Arcade, a huge site that does comic strips and stuff like that. The money raised (in the MILLIONS now) from Child's Play goes to benefit sick and dying children in hospitals, not to get children to play video games. Toys, books, and other childhood favorites are purchased and sent out to hospitals around North America.

Bumping this to say that it starts in 20 minutes! They've had over $200 donated so far, and it's not even live yet! The show runs until sunday evening, so get your money in there, and watch a bunch of nerds play Mario games all weekend.

$510 now, and I wouldn't watch just the game feed. Half the fun is watching the live people.

Re: Hardmode.org SMB Marathon - December 18th
I was up until 4am, and I am sad to admit that that means I watched for 7 hours straight. I'm up now, and I'm going back to bed soon, because really.. I need more sleep and everything outside is WHITE, and that is wrong.
They're at $550 now, and at least a few of them have been up all night long.

I know, the snow is so bad. And I have to get to work. Crap.
I love watch Lets Plays and such that have 24+ hour play throughs, especially towards the end, evey one gets really funny.

I, of course, missed it, thanks to half a dozen hours of no interwebs. They're up to $846 though, which is amazing.

Re: Hardmode.org SMB Marathon - December 18th
Final tally:
They beat New Super Mario Brothers Wii, and I think Galaxy and SMB2.
Raised $1140.
Two heads were shaved, 5 grown men jumped into a freezing pool, and lots of horrible Asian food/drink were consumed.

Thanks for the link. It was really amazing, I am really happy that they were willing to do that and give it all to a childrens charity and that people gave money.
