Copied and pasted from Wikipedia:
The percentage needed in any given coursework needed to achieve a certain grade and the assignment of GPA point values varies from one school to another. The most general and common grading scale is as follows:
Grade Percentage GPA value
A 90-100 3.5-4.0
B 80-89 2.5-3.49
C 70-79 1.5-2.49
D 60-69 1.0-1.49
F 0 - 59 0.0
(This scale is for students enrolled in regular courses.)
Grade Percentage GPA value
A 90-100 4.5-5.0
B 80-89 4.0-4.49
C 70-79 3.5-3.99
D 60-69 2.5-3.49
F 0 - 59 0.0-2.49
(This scale is for students enrolled in honors/advanced placement courses.)

Re: OMG OMG OMG GPA
Ugh. I made all A's and B's, and I wasn't in any honors classes last semester; but I am this semester; so which chart do I use?

Re: OMG OMG OMG GPA
Well, if your score last semester is not for your honors, it's the top one, I think.
In my defense if I'm wrong, we don't have GPAs, so I've only got a rough idea of what happens.

Re: OMG OMG OMG GPA
Long story short:
With no weighted classes (your regular courses are on a 4.0, weighted classes may be on 4.5 or 5.0 scales) and no advanced classes, it goes like this:
A-4.0
B-3.0
C-2.0
D-1.0
F-0.0
So with a 3.3, you got about a B overall. When you start weighted classes (I started in 11th, but you may be different) the scale will change and you'll get an advantage: 4.0 is still an A in your average GPA, but in a weighted class a 4.5 or 5.0 may be an A. So the math works out like this:
Normal Class 1: 3.0
Normal Class 2: 3.5
Weighted Class: 4.6
3.0
3.5
4.6+
11.1
then, 11.1 / 3= 3.69, or 3.7. that's probably an A-.
Now let's say that you have LOTS of weighted classes (I have only 2 unweighted classes out of 8 )...
NC1: 3.9
NC2: 3.3
WC1: 4.0
WC2: 4.5
WC3: 3.8
WC4: 5.0
WC5: 4.3
That added up and divided by the sum of the classes turns out to be 4.11, or actually HIGHER than an A average. It's a bit complicated to think about, but weighted classes have the grades A-F spread over 4.5 or 5.0 scales as opposed to just a 4.0 scale. This means that if you get a 100 average in a regular class, you get a 4.0. In a 5.0 scale, you'd get a 5.0. that, when averaged with your other GPAs, would drag them up.
For now though, anything above a 3.0 is good, but aim for a 4.0.
